In a narrow sense, law can represent the study of legal interpretation that objectively interprets actual laws and recognizes them using systemized principles, and in a broader sense, it includes philosophy, sociology, history, comparative law, policy studies, logic, psychology and anthropology related to law. In reality, all cases are related to the law are recorded in statutes and its contents and the contents are revealed and interpreted, which is the basics of law. Because the legal terms in these statutes are recorded in Chinese characters, it is a must for students to first study Chinese characters, and they also require sufficient understanding of the definition, concept and contents of the abstract expressions and terms. Though we say that it is abstract, they are expression of facts that occur in reality and therefore, the more that students are interested in the real society, the more easily they will be understand legal statutes.
Therefore, students will be able to find studying law more interesting if they get into the habit of connecting news and things that happen around us to legal issues. Major of Law is separated into public law and private law. In the Major of Public Law, students are trained to become administrative public employees and diplomats, while the Major of Private Law prepares students to become lawyers. Both majors study the constitutional laws, as well as civil law, criminal law, commercial law, Civil Proceedings Act, Criminal Proceedings Act, Labor Laws, Corporate Laws and International Law. Students who graduate from this major become not only lawyers, but also find employment in administrative organizations, finance, press, companies and national corporations.
The Yeungnam University Major of Law strives to pass down legal grounding and legal expertise, which is a must for lawyers, to its students. In addition, there are also other curricula aside from traditional law, such as environmental law, local autonomy laws, press and information law, intellectual property laws, etc. Furthermore, taking into consideration the need for actual experience in law, special lectures on legislations are held by legal experts and we are also preparing to open new programs in special fields to meet the changing modern society. The Yeungnam University Major of Law is operated together with the Major of Police Law so that students can choose which major they wish to go into. It is common to double major in the two, but students also have the option to have double majors in labor relations and real-estate.
The Major of Police Law can be freely selected with the Major of Law. The two majors are not categorized until the sophomore year and therefore, almost all classes are taken together. Students can choose whether to major in law or police when they graduate. Law is majored by students who are preparing for the Korean BAR exam and public employee tests related to law, while police law is for students preparing to become police.
In the Major of Police Law, students study constitutional law and private laws, while also getting more in-depth education on police administration laws, criminal proceedings law, police organization law, economical crimes, violence crimes, criminal investigation theories, criminal evidence laws, criminal psychology and social pathology. The Yeungnam University Major of Police Law classes are held in a modern lecture hall that is equipped with a processing center, language lab and legal data, and documented materials and the internet are also available for students.
There are various academic activities available such as mock cases and fair trade meetings, while prominent guest speakers are also invited for lectures. Through this, we are fostering human resources that can logically resolve various contract issues and legal profit conflicts that occur in the ever-complex social structure, while also maintaining security and order for the nation.
